James Brien was a son of Daniel Brien and Mary Murray of Carrigroe in the Catholic Parish of Ardfield & Rathbarry in West Cork.
Johanna McCarthy was a daughter of Denis McCarthy and Catherine Connor of Garralacka, Clonakilty and she was baptised in the Catholic Parish of Rosscarbery & Lissavaird on 28 November 1828. The Sponsors were John McCarthy and Ellen McCarthy. (Note that her surname on the baptism is recorded as Joan Guidagh because her father was of the McCarthy Gaibhdeach clan and we do find examples of the clan name being used as the surname).
James O'Brien and Johanna McCarthy married on 17 January 1850 in the Catholic Parish of Rosscarbery & Lisavaird. The Witnesses were Denis McCarthy and Daniel O'Brien.

Johanna McCarthy died at Tullyneasky on 25 Dec 1916. On her Death Cert it says she was 90 years, a farmer's widow. The informant of her death was her cousin, Ellen Wycherley, Rosscarbery.
