From page 11 of the "Fresno Bee" newspaper dated 29 March 1965 we read:
"The Rev Cornelius M. Casey, 61, pastor of Sacred Heart Church here since 1948 and a priest in Central California the past 30 years, died yesterday in a Fresno hospital.
His funeral will be held in the Church here Wednesday at 10.30 AM. Arrangements are being made by the Webb Chapel.
The Rev. Casey, a native of Ireland, was ordained at St. Johns College, Waterford, Ireland on June 16, 1929. Under assignment of the Monterey-Fresno Diocese he was the founding pastor of the Immaculate Conception Church in Tres Pinos, San Benito County in 1935.
Missionary Achievement
While there the Rev Casey was credited with a great amount of missionary work in the area. Church sources say a group of catechetical centers, established with the aid of missions catechists, carried knowledge of the Catholic faith to many in the outlying districts of the parish.
After three years in Tres Pinos he was assigned as pastor of St. Anthony's Church in Atwater, Merced County, and in 1943 became pastor of St. Joseph's Church in Los Banos where he remained until his assignment to Sacred Heart Church.
Having gained a thorough knowledge of the Spanish language, he was particularly close to persons of Mexican descent in this area.
Brother From Ireland
The Rev. Casey is survived by a brother, Frank, who arrived in Fresno from Ireland last week because of the priest's illness.
Bishop Aloysius J. Willinger will preside at the funeral. The office of the dead will be recited in Sacred Heart Church followed by a solemn requiem mass. The Rt. Rev. James Bennis, pastor of St. Ann's Church, Riverdale, and a classmate of the Rev. Casey, will be celebrant. The Rev. Michael Healey will be deacon of the mass and will deliver the eulogy. The Rev. James Dillon, pastor of St. Mary's in Delano will be subdeacon of the mass. Burial will be in the Lindsay Cemetery.
It was through the chancery office in Fresno that the sacrament of confirmation which was to have been conferred on Wednesday in Sacred Heart Church, has been postponed to a later date"
