Patrick B Hayes was a son of Peter Hayes and Catherine Driscoll of Curraghlicky, Drinagh, West Cork.
From the Catholic Church Register of Baptisms we see that Patrick Hayes was baptised 30 April 1876. Patrick's birth is registered in the State Birth records. It was registered on 26 May 1876 by Anne Maguire, of Toughbaun, Drinagh who was present at the birth. Here Patrick's date of birth is shown as 24 May 1876 I have seen several examples of this where the State record has the birth a number of days, weeks and even months after the baptism. Also noting that the event was in each case registered some weeks after the birth date on the State register. I believe that the baptism date is far more reliable as being very close to the birth date.
It was necessary to pay a registration fee to register a birth. This was a financial challenge for some struggling families and therefore a birth could go unregistered. You were fined if a birth was registered late so to avoid paying the fine some families gave a date of birth for the child later than the actual date and such can result in the baptism date predating the birth date in the records, and causing confusion for some researchers.

Timothy Hayes (son of Timothy Hayes and Bridget Brien), who was a first cousin of Patrick B Hayes, had a number of letters published in the Skibbereen, Co. Cork based newspaper called The Southern Star and below is an extract from one letter of 19 September 1925:
"Patrick B. Hayes, who lives in Astoria, Long Island – and is a native of Croughalicka, was here to see me a few days ago. He was accompanied by his sister, Mrs. Lynch, who lives in Boston. Pat was a sergeant of Company Me., 60th N.Y. regiment, during the great war; after his arrival back, he spent many months in hospital, having been gassed and bombed many times! He is almost completely recovered; is married, raising a family, and employed in one of the great abattois on the East Side of New York".
