Obituaries:

"John Bryson Sefton, aged 72 years, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of this community, died at his home on East Ninth avenue at 10:45 o'clock p.m., Friday January 3, of complications of diseases. Mr. Sefton had been in poor health for several moths. He was born April 9, 1836, in Clinton township, Butler county, and was married April 14, 1859, to Miss Martha Ferguson. To them were born ten children, as follows: John, who died some years ago; Bella, wife of Harvey Myers, Frank, Carrie, wife of Rev. A.B. Reid, of Albia, Iowa; Lawrence, Jennie, wife of Rev. Alvin Hazlett, of Beaver county; Edna, at home; Wilbur W., and Lillie, deceased. Mr. Sefton served as school director nine years in Clinton township, was one of the charter members of t he Oak Grove U.P. church, which he served as ruling elder for 22 years and clerk of the board of elders six years. When the Oak Grove meeting house was erected he was one of the builders, working on it all summer, giving his labor free. In 1882 he moved to Tarentum, and for some years was in the employ of the Kennedy Contracting Company, later for nine years with the Logan Lumber Company. For the past seven years he served as an elder in the United Presbyterian church of Tarentum. He was a man of strong convictions, a active temperance reformer, loyal to the church, and a devoted husband and father, and will be greatly missed. The funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon, conducted by his pastor."

"Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Ferguson Sefton, who died at her home in East Ninth avenue Saturday morning were held from the family residence at 2:30 this afternoon, conducted by Rev. W.J. Dickey, pastor of the First United Presbyterian church. Interment followed in Prospect cemetery. Mrs. Sefton was the widow of the late John B. Sefton, a well known Tarentum man. Her maiden name was Martha Ferguson. She was one of the best known women of Tarentum, having lived here for 40 years. She was born in County Antrim, Ireland, in 1841 and was the daughter of James and Rose Anna Ferguson. When Martha was 12 years of age the family came to the United States. Upon arrival in New York the family came to this section at once settling at Riddle's Cross Roads, Butler county, where members of the family still reside. In the year 1859 Miss Martha Ferguson became the bride of John B. Sefton. The marriage took place at Riddle's Cross Roads. Shortly after, Mr. and Mrs. Sefton came to Tarentum where the husband managed the old Logan Lumber Company planning mills. He continued in this capacity for a number of years, not retiring until compelled to by advancing old age. He died 14 years ago. Possessed of a sweet disposition and very charitable, Mrs. Sefton numbered here friends by the hundreds. She was a sincere Christian, a devout follower of the Master and modeling her every action after His precepts. As the result of hurts sustained more than a year ago in a fall, Mr. Sefton had been confined to her bed ever since. From the youngest to the oldest Mrs. Sefton was affectionately known as "Grandma" Sefton. She had been a member of the First Untied Presbyterian church ever since coming to Tarentum and when health permitted was an active worker. With the exception of a nephew who is in the Royal Irish Rifles, all of Mrs. Sefton's relatives live in the country. Mrs. Sefton was a mother of nine [should be ten] children, seven of whom are still living: They are Frank Sefton, of East Ninth avenue, Tarentum; Mrs. W.H. [Isabella] Myers, of the Bakerstown road; Mrs. T.C. Miller of East Ninth avenue; Lawrence Sefton, of Pittsburgh; Mrs. A. Hazlett of Hartstown; Mrs. E.A. Hornberger, of East Ninth avenue; and W.W. Sefton, of Highland street, a member of the Girt-Sefton Company. Mrs. Sefton leaves 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren."
