About 1930 the
Irish Folklore Commission sought native Irish speaker to collect stories and folklore from them. A folklore collector, Sean Ó Croinín collected a large amount from Seán Ó hAo (John Hayes above on this page). The collection was published by University College Dublin in 1985 in a 660 page book named
Seanchas Ó Chairbre (Folklore from Carbery). Seán Ó hAo was known as "
Hamit" after a famous seafarer.
