John was the eldest son of Denis O'Donovan & Nellie O'Driscoll John lived in Philadelphia
In 1848 after the eviction of his family following the death of his father John sent the fares for his mother, sister Catherine and brother Cornelius to travel to America.
He was a Veteran and on 3 July 1863 wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg as a member D Company of the 69th Pennsylvania Volunteers (Irish Volunteers of Philadelphia).
