The Keohane surname is recorded in several forms including Cohan, Cohane, Quohane MacKeoghane, Keoghan, Keoghane, Keohane, and Kohane, and is a very interesting and unusual Irish surname. According to the famous Irish etymologist, the late Edward MacLysaght, the Keohane surname is one that is (quote) "peculiar to West Cork". He does not, however, offer an explanation as to its probable meaning. He is certainly right about the name being “peculiar to West Cork”, as the following detail confirms. In Ireland in 1901, there were 1,051 people of the surname Keohane and 1,023 of these lived in County Cork, with the vast majority located in West Cork.
