John's younger brother, Timothy Hayes, wrote many letters which were published in the Souther Star newspaper in Skibbereen. From his letter published in the Southern Star dated 22 October 1910 we read the following extract "my brother John and his wife, who was by the way a native of Reenogoshill, Newmarket – but she’s dead, and so is John. Their address, with two of their four children, for the past nine years, is Grave 162, Range 9, Flatbush Cemetery"
