Daly

The earliest records of the Daly family in Ireland was in the region of what is now County Westmeath where Cuchonnacht O'Dalaigh resided. He died in 1139 AD.

The ancestral clan was called Corca Adaimh and they claimed descent from a son of Niall of the Nine Hostages, (High King of Ireland, 380 – 405 AD).

The surname Daly is among the most widely found in Ireland.  It is an anglicised form of the old gaelic name "Ó'Dálaigh" derived from Dálach meaning 'one who is present at assemblies' or more commonly called Councillor or Assembly person nowadays.  The root word is Dáil, which is the official title of the Irish Parliament, called “Dáil Eireann"?.

The modern Irish surnames O'Daly, Daly, Daley, Daily, Dailey, Ua Dálaigh and Dawley are derived from Ó Dálaigh.

In 1911 in Ireland we find 14,097 of the Daly surname.  Mary was the most common first name used and further information can be viewed down this page.

Some families were beginning to add the O' as in O'Daly, etc to the surname at the beginning of the 1900's.

Note: There is also a townland of Garranes South which lies to the South of Drimoleague village.

The townland of Garranes North is often referred to as Castledonovan and indeed Castledonovan may be used to cover a few townlands in the immediate area.

Tithe Applotment Books

We do note that in the Tithe Applotment Books for Castledonovan (dated 1826) the Daly name does appear there as a land tenant. This shows the amount which occupiers of agricultural holdings over one acre should pay in tithes to the Church of Ireland. To summarise the enties we have:

Name of Occupier Area (acres)
Jerry Donovan & sons 106
John Jerry & Widow Dealy 263
Daniel Mahony   83
Patrick Mahony   83
Widow Mahony & sons 184
Total 719

Note: The Townland of Castledonovan is small containing 123 acs 3rds 27 pchs.  The townland to the East is Garranes North containing 552 acs 2 rds 8 pchs and this is included under the Castledonovan heading.  Either a part of another townland was also included or the said areas shown were a little over estimated.
