Michael John Collins was a son of John Collins and Margaret Sullivan.  He was born in Woodfield, Clonakilty and baptised Michael in the Catholic Parish of Rosscarbery & Lisavaird on 17 July 1815.  The Sponsors were James Barry and Cath Meeny.
Maryanne (Mary Anne) O'Brien was a daughter of James O'Brien and Johanna McCarthy

Michael Collins and Maryanne O'Brien married on 26 February 1876 in the Catholic Parish of Rosscarbery & Lisavaird.  The Witnesses were Daniel O'Brien and James Collins.  Michael and Mary Anne had the following children born in Woodfield on dates shown:-

Michael Collins was a leading figure in the struggle for Irish independence in the early 1900’s.  His description includes him as a soldier, a politician and an Irish revolutionary leader.  He held positions as Minister for Finance, Director of Information, and Teachta Dála (TD) for Cork South in the First Dáil (Irish Parliament) of 1919, Adjutant General, Director of Intelligence, and Director of Organisation and Arms Procurement for the IRA, President of the Irish Republican Brotherhood from November 1920 until his death.  He was a member of the Irish delegation during the Anglo-Irish Treaty negotiations in London.  He was both Chairman of the Provisional Government and Commander-in-chief of the National Army.  Michael Collins was shot and killed in an ambush at Béal na Bláth, Co. Cork on 22nd August 1922 during the Irish Civil War.
