Denis O'Donovan or Denis "Rossa" as he was also known, was born about 1790. He was son of Jeremiah Donovan and Marie Donovan Báid
It was famine times in 1846 and 1847 and so in order to feed his family Denis took a job building roads under a famine relief scheme. He died of famine fever in March 1847 while working on the road to Glandore.
Denis and Ellen (15 yrs) married in 1818. They were tenant farmers.
After Denis died in 1847, Nellie was evicted, which was not uncommon. We see some dubious instances of people being sent to prison in Cork for even "suspicion of ..." as can be viewed in this article.
In 1848 her son, John, who was living in Philadelphia, sent money for his mother, his sister Catherine and brother Cornelius to go to America.
