Benjamin O'Connor


Benjamin was a son of Benjamin & Margaret O'Connor of Bantry.

Margaret was widowed following the death of Benjamin senior, and she was raising their three children, in poor circumstances.  Local businessman, William Martin Murphy, helped by giving her son, Benjamin, a job in the company and eventually made him a partner.  The new company was called Murphy & O'Connor Ltd., Bantry.  Today (2012), under different management, Murphy & O'Connor Ltd. is still a thriving hardware / builder providers business in Bantry.

According to the Minute Book of the Company William Martin Murphy reported at a meeting held on 9th Oct 1918 "with the deepest regret the death on the 10th Sept last of his esteemed friend and colleague, who was the only other director of the Company"

Bantry Town Commissioners were first elected in 1896 and at their first Meeting on 17 Aug 1896 Benjamin was elected Chairman of that Body.

Benjamin died at his residence, The Square, Bantry.  He was aged 62 years and a bachelor.

An extract from the Minutes of the meeting of Bantry Town Commissioners on 21 Oct 1918 is “That we the Town Commissioners of Bantry at our first meeting since the death of our valued and esteemed colleague, Mr Benjamin O’Connor J.P., who since the formation of this Board has been a Member of it, and its first Chairman, desire to place on record an expression of the deep loss we as well as the public of the town in general, have sustained by his death and we beg to tender to his relatives our sincere sympathy in their bereavement and, as a slight token of our regret we adjourn this meeting�?.

Benjamin is buried in the Abbey Cemetery, Bantry
